The Samsung Lions have snapped a nasty losing streak. Head coach Park Jin-man vowed to get back into winning mode against the Hanwha Eagles.
Samsung defeated the Kiwoom Heroes 4-2 in the seventh meeting between the teams in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on Tuesday. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and improved Samsung’s season record to 29 wins, one draw and 25 losses. They evened their head-to-head record with Kiwoom at four wins and four losses this season.
Starting pitcher Denny Reyes had his best outing since joining the organization. He threw seven innings of five-hit ball with two walks and three strikeouts. It was his first Quality Start Plus (seven innings of three earned runs or less in a start) in the KBO, and he earned the win. Reyes improved to 6-2, tying him with Choi Won-tae (LG Twins), James Nail (KIA Tigers), and Enmanuel De Jesus (Kiwoom Heroes) for the most wins in the KBO.
“Our starting pitcher, Reyes, did a great job of shutting down the opposing hitters with his reversal. We were able to win the game thanks to Reyes’ strong pitching,” Park said, giving Reyes a thumbs-up for his ace performance.
At the plate, Lee Sung-gyu was the standout performer. Starting in the No. 6 spot in right field, Lee went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. He hit the game-winning home run. With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Lee took a 140-kilometer fastball from Park Seung-ju over the right field wall. It was Lee’s second straight game with the cannon.
Yang Woo-hyun also showed a performance that raised expectations. Yang Woo-hyun, who graduated from Chungam High School, is a right-handed-hitting infielder who joined Samsung as the 22nd overall pick in the third round of the 2019 rookie draft. Yang, who was officially registered as a rookie ahead of the game, started at second base in the No. 9 spot. Yang 메이저사이트 went 2-for-4 with a walk, a hit, a strikeout, and an RBI.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning after a 1-0 lead, Lee Sung-gyu singled to left, Ryu Ji-hyuk was hit by a pitch and Lee Byung-heon walked, Yang Woo-hyun drew a bases-loaded walk off of reliever Kim Sun-ki. On his first day as an official player, he got a hit and an RBI.
“On offense, Lee Sung-kyu, who hit a home run for the second consecutive game, played a dazzling performance, and Yang Woo-hyun’s bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning was the key to winning today’s game,” said Park Jin-man.
The bullpen also did a good job of protecting the offense. Kim Jae-yoon did his part with a scoreless eighth inning, and Oh Seung-hwan, who took the 안전놀이터 mound with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead, gave up one more run, but finished the game without allowing another run.
“The bullpen did enough to close out the game today,” Park said.
Despite giving up the winning run, Samsung snapped a three-game losing streak.
