Burton, who made his third and last planned cup appearance of the season at the Rickware Racing Ford Mustang after stepping on the Circuit of America and Chicago road course, is a dasa that starts 31st in 39 cars and gives up a lap to winner Michael McDowellI endured a race.
The Englishman admitted a mistake for a pit lane speeding penalty and overshooting the first corner while chasing Kevin Harvick. He also lost time after being overturned by Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
But setting up the sixth-fastest race lap despite “disappointing results,” Burton said his pace was “really good” and was pleased with the weekend’s improvement.
“The speed is there. It’s just that I made a mistake today,” said the 15-time F1 race winner.
“The car worked well. I was frustrated because I didn’t have a pace. Today, the staff did a great job setting up for me.
“I was able to brake later, so I was able to move a lot. I can’t imagine how many cars I actually overtook during the race.
“But at the end of the first pit stop, I was galloping into the pit lane. So I had to do a drive-through. Kill the race in the pit lane for about 30 seconds.
So, it made you very disappointed. And when I moved on to someone, I think Stenhouse Jr. turned me around, and I took a little more time. It wasn’t very good.
“Then pushing all the way to kick Kevin out, I locked the door and went straight across the grass at number one. So, I had to stop and go.
It was messy. But the speed remained the same. It was really good.”
He said, “It’s just a disappointing result. I enjoyed it. A lot of overtaking, wheel-to-wheel banging, perhaps as you can see from the side of the car.”
Chicago winner Shane Van Gisbergen was the best international player in the second cup event, and the three-time supercar champion finished 10th in the trackhouse racing chevrolet under project 91 flag.
Kiwi, who is expected to move full-time to NASCAR next year after making his first oval start on Friday’s truck series outing, acknowledged he expected NASCAR to face tougher work at a permanent stadium he visited before compared to his first street race in Chicago.
“It’s hard because everyone’s here,” said Van Gisbergen, who managed to lead one lap in one of the green-flagged pit-stop cycles.
“Everyone knows the track and there’s a lot more room for error. Everyone is racing aggressively.
“It’s so much fun to be back that I hope I can do more.”
Van Gisbergen’s supercar rival and current series point leader Brody Kostecki finished 11th in a race that matched most national records represented in a single cup race (7), but the Australian had to start behind the field after a qualifying clash. 2010 Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller replaced Noah Gragson at legacy motor club, earning 13 positions from the start, finishing 24th in his third career cup start. He also carried out a speeding penalty on Pitt Road.
Like Kostecki, Burton’s former F1 sparring partner, Kamui Kobayashi, made his NASCAR debut, beating Burton in the preliminary round and starting in 28th place.
However, when the 2023 Daytona 500 winner jumped into the Toyota World Endurance Championship ace at Turn 1, he also played against Stenhouse, and as a result of the rotation, Kobayashi eventually lost several spots as he finished 33rd.
The Japanese said he had “learned a lot” from the experience and was generous with the clash with Stenhouse.
“I got hit by someone, but this is NASCAR,” he said.
“But the race on the field was great. It was a great win. I’ve had a good experience here.”
