Eric Dier says individual performances made the difference in the match.
Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarterfinals of the 2023-24 season at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, at 4 a.m. ET. Munich and Real will meet in the second leg on Sept. 9 to determine who owns the final final ticket.
In the early stages, it was all Munich. Kane, Leroy Sane, and Jamal Moussaoui all had shots on target early on and pushed hard. But in the 24th minute, the hosts took the lead when Toni Kroos’s incisive pass found Vinicius in space behind the backline, and he took one-two with the ball. Kim Min-jae’s defense was largely to blame for the goal, as he lost sight of Vinicius in the process.
Munich fought back. Sané equalized in the eighth minute of the second half to tie the game. Then, in the 11th minute, Musalla earned a penalty kick opportunity, which Kane converted. However, a foul on Kim Min-jae in the final minute of the game awarded Real a heartbreaking PK, and Vinicius stepped up to take the spot-kick and slotted it cleanly into the net to end the game in a 2-2 draw.
Dyer, who started, had a solid performance on the day. According to soccer stats site Footmob, Dyer completed 96% of his passes (79 out of 82), had one shot on target, 89 touches of the ball, won one ground ball contest, made one tackle, and completed two long passes.
German ‘Bild’ gave Dyer a rating of 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. The German ‘kicker’ gave him a 2.5, saying: “Calm and impeccable in the back four. Made a good block against Hodriguez. I could have tried more headers from the front.”
After the match, Dyer expressed his disappointment with the result, which ended in a draw. “It was a really good game for the neutral fans,” he told 사설토토 BeIn Sports. But for us, it’s a bit disappointing to lose 2-2. Individual performances had an impact. These are the things that can make a difference in a split second,” he said.
Dier was completely out of favor at Tottenham Hotspur last winter and went on loan to Munich. He was quickly promoted by Thomas Tuchel and established himself as a first-choice center back alongside Matthias Dier. He has started 10 of the 13 Bundesliga games this season and has started every game in the Champions League since the second leg of the round of 16 against Lazio. Kim Min-Jae, who was naturally relegated to the bench, was handed his first start in a while, but he was involved in both goals.
