We planned to eliminate 200VLTs in a short period of time. However, the current NDP government is taking time and has drawn 200 people in more than a decade.
King’s College students found a copy of their internal policy that the slow removal of VLTs was due to the procedures of Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. Under this policy, business closures are closely defined, and in most cases, VLTs can be shut down at one location and transferred to another.
The document found suggests several scenarios in which the facility could be permanently closed. For example, if an entity ceases to operate and sells an asset to another location, the latter can use it if it is licensed by ALC. Alternatively, if the business is suspended while the owner is looking for a buyer, it can remain closed for up to one year. This provision was introduced in the revision of the consumption policy four years ago.
VLT could be a selling point, or additional revenue source, because Crown allows companies to temporarily close until buyers are found. King’s College students had discussions with numerous business owners who had previously run VLTs, and the prevailing opinion was that if the game console was listed for sale, it would make the business even more attractive.
According to the Crown and Consumption Protocol, 20 to 25 VLT positions were changed each year. However, spokeswoman Gillian Moore shared that the number is outdated, and the current number is only 6. Crown also had six commercial venues voluntarily offering 20 VLTs between 2010 and 2020. However, they are redeployed because of a policy that allows companies to be temporarily shut down.

However, despite the policy of reducing the number of VLT machines in the Atlantic region, the Crown Company announced its international gaming technology in April this year.
