Basketball Association Re-Contests for Men’s 3-on-3 National Team Coach After Being Rejected by the Board of Directors

The association’s board of directors accepted the appointment of coaches Ahn Jun-ho and Jeon Byeong-jun

as head coaches of the men’s 5-on-5 national team and the women’s 3-on-3 national team,

but did not approve Commentator Lee Sang-yoon.

The appointment of a national team coach is structured in such a way that the board of directors gives final approval

to the confirmed candidates through document screening and interviews by the Association’s Performance Improvement Committee.

In the basketball world, there have been constant voices of concern that existing coaches have a poor understanding of 3-on-3 basketball,

which is different from 5-on-5 basketball in terms of game characteristics and tendencies of suitable players.

In fact, the association specified 3-on-3 coaching and player experience and understanding of the tactics of the sport in the evaluation criteria data released along with the announcement of the re-opening.

Commentator Lee also applied for the 5-on-5 coach position before becoming the 3-on-3 coach,

but was pushed out by Coach Ahn Jun-ho.

The document submission period for this re-opening is from the 26th to the 7th of next month.

The Association will reconvene the Performance Improvement Committee

on the 15th of next month and conduct interviews with applicants.

The contract period is until the date of return to Korea after the end of the 2025 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3-on-3 Asia Cup,

can be extended depending on the interim evaluation.

The men’s 3-on-3 national team participated in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games

held in September and October last year under former Coach Kang Yang-hyun, but failed to win a medal.

In the semifinals against Chinese Taipei, the team lost 17-18 in overtime,

lost 20-21 in the bronze medal match against Mongolia.
