Miracle Doosan explodes for 21 hits, 13 runs in 13-11 thriller over SSG

The Doosan Bears proved why their nickname is Miracle. Doosan overcame a bad check swing call and nine runs in one inning to turn the game around.

Doosan defeated SSG Landers 13-11 in the visiting game of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League regular season at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on Monday (12,451 total attendance).

With the win, fourth-place Doosan moved within one game of third-place Samsung Lions with 57 wins, two draws and 53 losses. Meanwhile, sixth-place SSG, which lost its second straight game, fell to 53 wins, one draw, and 54 losses, a five-game deficit.

The game was a 34-hit explosion for both teams, including 13 for SSG and 21 for Doosan. Before the fifth inning was over, Doosan reached base for the sixth time this season and the 1116th time in the KBO for every starter. Foreign-born hitter Jared Young continued to showcase his clutch instincts, going 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs. Jung Soo-bin went 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk, and two stolen bases to reach 40 stolen bases in a season for the first time in his career, joining Jo Sung-hyun, who already has 52 stolen bases, as the third pair of players in KBO history to reach the milestone. Other notable contributions came from Yang Seok-hwan, who went 3-for-6 with a double and a home run, and Kim Ki-yeon, who came off the bench to drive in the lone run.

For SSG, Choo Shin-soo went 3-for-4 with a home run, one RBI, one walk and one stolen base. Ha Jae-hoon went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Guillermo Heredia, Han Yoo-seom and Jung Jun-jae each had multi-hit games, but it was not enough in the loss.

SSG’s batting order was Choi Ji-hoon (center field), Choo Shin-soo (designated hitter), Choi Jung (third base), Guillermo Heredia (left field), Han Yoo-seom (right field), Kim Min-sik (catcher), Park Sung-han (shortstop), Jung Jun-jae (second base), and Oh Tae-gon (first base). The starter is right-hander Song Young-jin.

Doosan countered with a lineup of Jeong Soo-bin (center fielder), Kang Seung-ho (second baseman), Jared Young (right fielder), Yang Ji (catcher), Yang Seok-hwan (first baseman), Kim Jae-hwan (designated hitter), Heo Kyung-min (third baseman), Jeon Min-jae (shortstop), and Cho Su-sung (left fielder). Choi Won-jun, a right-handed sidearm, will start.

The teams traded runs in the first inning. In the top of the first, Kang Seung-ho singled to left and stole second, and Yang Yang-ji doubled to left-center to bring him home. In the bottom of the inning, Choi Ji-hoon tied the game at 1-1 with a solo shot to center field after an eight-pitch at-bat. It was Choi’s ninth home run of the season and his third leadoff home run of the year.

Kim Jae-hwan singled to right, Heo Kyung-min walked, and Jeon Min-jae singled to left to chase SSG starter Song Young-jin off the mound. Choi sent Ha to third on a fly ball to center field, and Guillermo Heredia and Han Yoo-seom followed with back-to-back singles to start the rally. Choi Won-joon was replaced by Jung Chul-won after giving up a walk to Kim Min-sik to load the bases and a pushing single to Park Sung-hwan.

However, Chung gave up a triple to Jun-Jae Jung in right field, a single to Tae-Gon Oh in left center and a double to Jae-Hoon Ha in left.

Despite the 5-10 deficit, Doosan chased diligently. In the top of the fourth, leadoff hitter Jung Soo-bin drew a walk and Kang Seung-ho reached on a throwing error by Han Yu-seom to put runners on second and third. Jared followed with a double to left-center to make it 7-10.

Choo Shin-soo’s RBI single brought SSG within one run. In the top of the fifth, Jung Jun-jae led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on Oh Tae-gon’s grounder, and Choo Shin-soo brought him home with a double down the left field line. Doosan Jared answered with a leadoff homer in the top of the sixth. Doosan trailed 8-11.

In the top of the eighth inning, Jeong Soo-bin and Jared singled against Noh Kyung-eun, and Yang Ji-hyun drew a walk against reliever Cho Byung-hyun to load the bases. Yang Seok-hwan followed with an RBI single to left-center and Heo Kyung-min followed with an RBI double to center to tie the game at 11-11.

Doosan eventually turned the game around. In the top of the ninth inning, Jung Soo-bin singled and stole second base. With his second stolen base of the day, Soo-bin joined Cho, who already has 52 stolen bases, as the third duo in KBO history to steal 40 bases together. Kang Seung-ho drew an automatic walk and Jared reached on an infield single to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Kim Ki-yeon hit a two-run double down the left field line against reliever Jang Ji-hoon to make it 13-11. SSG fell victim to the upset as they were unable to overturn the score.
